Franklin A. Moss, a retired Army Colonel who served in the engineer and infantry before he specialized in personnel management and administrative assignments, died peacefully at home on the 7th of August. He was a Fairfax, Virginia resident.

Colonel Moss was born in Ellisville, Mississippi on March 13, 1934, and was a native of Laurel, Mississippi. He was a 1956 graduate of what is now the University of Southern Mississippi. He entered the Army in 1956 as a 2LT. His first assignment was as an Engineer student at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. In his 30+ years of service, he served as an Engineer, Infantryman, Adjutant General Officer in many stateside assignments. His service included one tour in Vietnam, two tours in Germany and one tour of joint military service in the Philippines. From 1977 to 1981 he was Director of the Army Publications, Adjutant General’s office. His final assignment was as a council member on the Army Military Review Board.

Colonel Moss achieved a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Syracuse University in 1967 and a Masters of Science degree in Marriage and Family Therapy in 1990 from Virginia Tech. He was also a graduate of the Command and General College and the Naval War College, plus other military schools.

His decorations included two Legion of Merit awards, the Bronze Star Medal for RVN Service, and 2 Meritorious Service Order awards and the Expert Infantry Badge.

After retiring from active duty in 1986 (at Fort Myers), Colonel Moss went to work for the Association of the U.S. Army as Building and Administrative Services Manager for AUSA in Arlington, Virginia until 1998.

Frank is survived by his wife of 72 years, Clara Carr Moss of Fairfax, Virginia, three children, Stephen Moss (Tina) of Leland, NC, Carol Snider of Fairfax, Virginia, and Robert (Debbie) Moss of Winchester, Virginia. He had six grandchildren – Travis Moss, Lauren Wolfe (Steven), Heather Snider, Brittany Harper, Katie Moss and Laura Moss. Colonel Moss also had six great-grandchildren – Aiden Johnson, Landon Johnson, Aubree Johnson, Nolan Harper, Owen Wolfe and Avery Wolfe.
